Some activites are avaliable for special needs.

The Simonside Youth Initiative Centre is owned and maintained by South Tyneside Council and is part of the Youth Service. The building has recreation hall and a 4-court sports hall. The sports hall is available for hire at weekends only, with limited availability throughout the week.

South Tyneside Councils Outdoor Education Department use and maintain the climbing wall facility located in the sports hall. The Outdoor Education team use the centre on a daily basis and provide adventurous activities for schools and youth groups primarily.

Activities

  • Divers

    The sub aqua section has been based in the centre for over 30 years and has a core membership of approx 20 members. The club has two RIBs and also the ability to refill their own air tanks. The club has a wealth of experience and can provide accredited instructors for all BSAC awards.

  • Duke of Edinburgh Award

    The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is committed to providing for young people an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development, which is of the highest quality and the widest reach.

    The YIC Centre can accommodate groups wishing to improve on their expedition skills or perhaps individuals can join one of the sections within the centre to learn a new skill, complete their service or undertake the physical section of the award at Bronze, Silver or Gold levels.

  • Rock Climbing

    The centre boasts 26 state of the art climbing walls with slab and overhanging sections. The walls are varied and cater for all levels of ability from novices to experienced climbers. With fully qualified staff and equipment available the climbing wall is a popular activity.

  • St John's Ambulance

    It is a well-established community group that supports local events providing first aid assistance. The young people involved learn new skills and gain certificates in health and safety activities as well as first aid skills.

  • Wado Ryu

    This martial art is a form of karate and has been based at Simonside YIC for a number of years and is a very successful club. Wado Ryu has fully qualified instructors who take you through every step helping towards gradings and competitions.
