Guide dogs are permitted onto site. The site is level but rough so wheelchair users may require help. The West Gate is only accessible via 2 flights of stairs.

Built in AD 160s, this Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site stood guard at the mouth of the River Tyne and controlled the main port of entry to the Roman Empire in Britain. An important feature of South Tyneside's Roman Heritage, Arbeia combines the excavated remains of a Roman military supply base with reconstructions of the Forts buildings to present a complete picture of what life was like on Hadrian's Wall. The West Gate has been reconstructed and work has been completed to reconstruct the Commanding Officer's house and soldiers' barrack block.

Activities

  • Arbeia Roman Fort

Built around AD160, Arbeia Roman Fort once guarded the entrance to the River Tyne, playing an essential role in the mighty frontier system. Based four miles east of the end of Hadrian's Wall at South Shields, the Fort was originally built to house a garrison and soon became the military supply base for the 17 Forts along the Wall.
